How To Remove Rats Without Kiling Them
By Gillian Knebel
Several years ago I read somewhere about how a family got rid of Chipmunks: They did this by playing loud pop music whenever the Chipmunks appeared, they were working on the assumption that the creatures would not want to stay around unpleasant sounds and the assumption worked. Some time later when I was living in an old cottage in Ireland, I was woken often in the night by the thumping and running sounds of what must have been Rats above my head. As there was no way I would put down poison or traps to get rid of them I decided to use the music method. So I plugged in a radio and hoiked it into the attic. Whenever I heard the pattering sounds I'd switch the radio on quite loud to a pop music station and turn the dial so it was slightly off the station and it sounded decidedly unpleasant to my ears. I did this a couple of times for half to one hour stretches and sure enough the rats left, in disgust I should think. I recently recommended this method to my sister who has squirrels in her loft space and wait to see how she gets on. I suppose this method would not be tenable in a built-up area where neighbours would be disturbed by the noise, unless it was possible to forwarn them of what was happening and enlist their co-operation for the short time it would take to deter the rats. (The electronic mouse and rat deterrent was switched on but hadn't worked to keep them away)

I must be a rat, I hate pop too
I personally cannot believe people continue using rat poison. My local grocery stocks Racumin. It says on the prackaging that the rat will die a gruesome death. I wouldn't wish that kind of a death on my worst enemy.
