I'm proud of.....
By Gillian Knebel
I'm always surprised by what I'm proud of in my own life. Its not the good works I've done, or the people I've helped, or the animals I've rescued. Its the creative work I've accomplished. This makes me very proud indeed and has nothing to do with what others think of me and my work. Its great to feel satisfied when a project is completed and a vision is expressed. A funny thing - at a school prizegiving in my last year there and this is going back a good while, I won several prizes and a cup, which meant that my name would be engraved in gold lettering in the school hall. (that was a big deal then) I felt proud of my achievements and it felt great to have excelled for my parents sake. Only two years ago I was talking about the cup to my parents and they had no idea that I had won it. They had been seated very far back and couldn't hear what was being said as the prizes were handed out.... That feeling of pride in achievement is quite a rare one and something I cherish in my life. I also feel proud of a friendship I have maintained through extreme difficulty and much opposition. Pride is a fabulous thing as long as it doesn't lead to arrogance. To be proud of something is one thing to be arrogant and puffed up with self-importance quite another. To be modestly proud - is there such a thing? Come to think of it, life has a levelling effect or that's how I've experienced it so far. One moment I might feel extremely proud and the next humbled by the proverbial banana skin. That's why in my life at least, the proud moments are few and far between. Not much chance of getting overblown here.... |
