So Many Hobbies

I once knew a man who changed his hobby every six months or so. He was highly intelligent and creative and when he took up a new interest dived into it with a vengeance. He would immerse himself in a new hobby completely, buy all the best equipment and the gadgets that went with it, learn all there was to know about it and became an expert very quickly. What was most striking about him and the way he jumped from one hobby to another, was just how good he became at whatever he touched. Another individual would have to spend years to attain the skills he mastered in months. Over the few years that I knew him he became adept at Photography, Singing, Stamp Collecting, Dress Making, Composing Music, Sculpture, Indian cookery, Higher Mathematics, Astronomy and Bird Watching. His cupboards and wardrobes were full to the brim with equipment. His bookshelves were overflowing with manuals and workbooks. While he was in his dress making phase, the proud possessor of a very good sewing machine; knowing him a little by this time, I requested that he make me a suit. Which he did - a beautiful matching top and skirt in checked brown material. My relatives who live in France, said that I'd not look out of place in Paris wearing it. Needless to say that suit was one of the last things he made in the 'sewing phase' and he very quickly transferred his attentions to something else. I still have the suit whereas the man is no longer a part of my life. If you know anything about Astrology you will know what I mean when I say he had Gemini Sun and Gemini Moon in his chart. Life around him was never dull and I think that was one of the things that I most enjoyed about his company. Also, a little of what he learnt about his various hobbies rubbed off on me and I believe that I became acquainted with and interested in a wider range of subjects as a result. |
